Perched on a sheltered harbour, twenty miles from the nearest shop, the refurbished fish factory was the first room the band had ever recorded in outside their home studio.  Engineers Pete and Cal, truly dedicated to the island they live on, held the room for ten days, offering the kind of generous, unhurried attention that lets a record breathe. The remote landscape pulled the Isles into new, thrilling territory. They kept binoculars close by, peering through the soaring live-room window to scan the sprawling coastal view for white eagles and dolphins.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e3 is record of firsts for the Brighton-based band. The first as a true three-piece, with close friend Joe Taylor (Anna B Savage, Iona Zajac) joining on drums, and the first they’ve ever recorded live. Jack and Lily trade shimmering guitars and sunlit harmonies like shared secrets, while Joe Taylor anchors it all: falsetto drifting wistfully above, drums crashing below. These are songs that read like postcards or pages ripped from a diary and slipped under someone's door. 'Bom Bane's' is named for the off-kilter Kemptown restaurant the band orbited. ‘Embo' is two verses long and a nostalgia-soaked love letter to a seafront flat at Embassy Court, and the people and memories that passed through it. Time for Friendly Fires to step back into the spotlight and claim their place at British pop’s top table. “This is some of the best music we’ve written,” says Macfarlane. “Doing something truly honest, putting it out there and hoping it connects with people – that feels like a huge leap of faith for us.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAt one point, the future of Friendly Fires felt uncertain. “We had 100 ideas that never saw the light of day and songs that were finished but still didn’t feel right,” says Macfarlane. “We were unsure about what the point of this was and what we’re about.” There were lengthy gaps between albums. Doubts and crises of confidence. They’d put out three stellar releases – 2008’s self-titled and Mercury Music Prize-nominated debut, 2011’s Pala and the equally critically-acclaimed Inflorescent in 2019 – but for a while, a fourth was elusive.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTime to unravel it all and start again. Gradually, the pair found a way to get looser with their songwriting process: stop overthinking, start drilling down into the core. “Our friendship has been led by the fact we’re in a band together and we’re focused on so many other things,” agrees Gibson. “There were things that Edd and I had never discussed before,” Macfarlane continues, “like a friend of ours passing away when we were younger. And then a dear friend of mine also died during the making of this record.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBeyond the personal material, the pair dug deeper into the key influences at the heart of Friendly Fires too. There’s a sense of collaborating with their past and present selves on the new album, as the pair flipped through their vast vault of song ideas and stems and drew on material that represented the best of the band’s essence. “We blasted back through the archives and reminded ourselves what Friendly Fires are all about,” says Gibson. “There was definitely a conscious effort to come back to what we were about in the first place.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWith that in mind, they drew up a huge playlist of indie-dance bands from across the eras, from 70s Talking Heads and New Order to the Balearic and baggy late-80s through to the halcyon days of ‘nu-rave’, a mid-2000s, short-lived sound from London that Friendly Fires skirted the edges of. “We were able to look through that lineage and see ourselves as part of it,” says Macfarlane, as did James Dring (Jamie T, Gorillaz) who mixed the record. Due to alcoholism, singer Arthur Nolan was unable to meaningfully take part in the live shows so the tour was promptly cancelled one show in. Two founding members, Harrison Charles and Oscar Tebbutt, left the band and they quietly retreated from the public eye to go on hiatus. As Arthur worked on his health and the dust settled, each member of the band started developing ideas and the road to recovery - on a personal and group level - became an artistic endeavour on its own.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTwo new members, Dina Willcock (bass) and Tristan Petsola (drums), were recruited alongside Joseph Nash (guitar), Olivia Morgan (keys), Oliver Chester-Nolan (guitar) and Arthur (vocals) and Blue Bendy were six again. The band gently tested the water with a smattering of festival slots and headline shows to try out new material and give their favourites from ‘So Medieval’ some much deserved love. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd then in Germany, at the end of a tour in Europe, disaster struck again. Having worked incredibly hard, it was just one show too much and Arthur fell off the wagon, missed the flight home and was marooned in Germany for over a week, completely out of contact and drinking heavily before emerging in a sanatorium in Cologne - referenced in the album closer ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’. Blue Bendy did what they do and regrouped, huddled round their singer and provided the support and space he needed whilst somehow completing the album alongside wunderkind producer Balazs Altsach. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWith the album now nearing completion, the band gently began gigging again, and then, near the end of 2025 they hit their biggest stage yet as main support to Black Country, New Road at Brixton Academy. A hugely successful night, the band looked at home in a big room and harnessed the feeling as motivation to complete the recording sessions.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd what of the album? It’s full of the earnest brutality and witty self-deprecation of their debut; jam packed with low and high culture references, internet subculture and the hangdog defiance that they have built their name on, but the melodies hit a bit sweeter, the music is a touch more urgent and intense. You might want to whisper it, but there are some ‘pop’ moments on the album. Not in the bubblegum sense, but in the rich lineage of alternative British guitar bands that have hit the sweet spot between idiosyncrasy and accessibility.
